Well Mauger’s now got a temporary hydrogen pump which can half fill the 666km range Nexo, thanks to enquiries through Global Bus Ventures and Christchurch company AFCryo which exports technology globally.

It operates at about 350 bar pressure (which can fill a truck) while about 700 bar is needed to fill a hydrogen car, Mauger says. The higher pressure (700 bar) supplies sufficient energy to give a hydrogen car respectable range.

Mauger explains the temporary hydrogen setup isn’t ideal but will tide him over for a few months until a proper hydrogen refuelling system is in place.

“I’m also involved with a Christchurch landfill project which could use methane to generate hydrogen,” Mauger says, adding that Taranaki-based Hiringa Energy is exploring using methane for such purposes.
