Tesla adds cut-price Model 3 and Model Y variants
Tesla has launched stripped-back standard versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in the US, cutting prices by about US$5,000–$5,500 and trading some features for smaller batteries and simpler trim.
The Model 3 Standard starts at US$38,630 and the Model Y Standard at US$41,630 including destination fees.
Both cars keep Tesla’s 15.4-inch central touchscreen and over-the-air updates, but lose items such as ventilated and heated rear seats, a rear screen and ambient lighting; the Model Y swaps its glass roof for metal.
Cloth replaces synthetic leather, and steering-wheel adjustment is manual. Paint choices are limited to grey, white or black with 18-inch wheels standard.
Range remains competitive at an estimated 321 miles (517km) per charge.
The Model 3 claims 0–60mph in 5.8s, the Model Y 6.8s. Both are rear-wheel drive with scaled-down packs (the Model Y uses 69.5kWh) and slightly slower charging than higher trims.
US deliveries for the Model 3 Standard are expected from December–January, while the Model Y is available to order now. Tesla has not confirmed if the Standard models will be offered in New Zealand.
