Tesla extends range, buyers still switch off

Tesla’s may have just shown off its new toy – but it’s still missing the mass-market sweet spot by 160km.

As EV darling Telsa rolls out its latest design prototype, a large US study has found that most buyers won’t even consider a plug-in vehicle until they’re capable of 300 miles (480km) range on a single charge.

The freshly-minted Tesla Model 3 will be hitting the 200 mile (360km) mark, as will the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV.

This larger range will open up the EV world for many buyers, but according to the US’ National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 56% of buyers won’t even consider plugging an EV into their purchasing short-list until the magic 300 mark is reached.

Further demands from potential petrol converts include 53% needing a guarantee that they could consistendly park near electric outlets at home.
