Tesla Model Y L edges closer to NZ arrival after Australian approval

Tesla’s three-row, six-seat Model Y L is a step closer to New Zealand showrooms after receiving regulatory approval in Australia.

Tesla Australia has secured Australian Design Rule (ADR) approval for the long-wheelbase Model Y, clearing the way for it to go on sale across the Tasman in the coming months.

Given the close alignment between Tesla’s Australian and New Zealand model line-ups, the approval signals the Model Y L is likely to be introduced here in the near future.

Measuring 4969mm in length, the Model Y L is 177mm longer than the standard Model Y. Its wheelbase has been stretched by 150mm, creating additional cabin space for a third row of seating.

Inside, the extended body accommodates six seats arranged in three rows, with two seats in each row. The second row features captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation and power adjustment, while the third row also gains standard heating.

Under the skin, the Model Y L uses the same 84kWh battery pack as the Model Y Long Range. It retains the Long Range model’s electric motors, with peak power listed at 378kW in Australian government documents.

The Model Y L has yet to be tested under the WLTP cycle, but it is expected to deliver a driving range of up to 681km.
