Vessev unveils VS–Drive, a new electric propulsion system for hydrofoils
Auckland marine tech firm Vessev has launched the VS–Drive, a podded, submersible electric motor it says will lift performance and reliability for hydrofoiling vessels — debuting on the company’s nine-metre battery-electric VS–9 and designed to scale to 12 and 18-metre models and an upcoming recreational boat.
The VS–Drive combines a custom direct-drive brushless motor with a sealed, active cooling loop that Vessev says keeps operating temperatures under 50°C. By driving the propeller directly, it removes gearboxes and long driveshafts to cut losses and maintenance, while a vectorable rudder mount aids low-speed manoeuvring. Sensors monitor the unit in real time, and a modular layout is designed for easier servicing.
“The VS–Drive began as a clean-sheet design to overcome one of the trickiest challenges in electric marine propulsion: overheating,” said Vessev co-founder and chief technology officer Max Olson.
“The result is sustained high-torque output, and unparalleled performance in tropical climates.”
Rated for a continuous 65kW (90hp) at a 25-knot cruise — with peak power of 110kW (150hp) and 400Nm torque — the near-silent drive powers the VS–9 to a claimed 30-knot top speed and up to 50 nautical miles of range at light load. The carbon-fibre, fully retractable foils are intended to widen operating envelopes across different marinas and sea states.

Vessev chief executive Eric Laakmann said the new unit will unlock a new level of what’s possible for electric marine transport.

Development of the VS–Drive received co-funding from the Government’s Low Emission Transport Fund, administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).
The first Vessev VS-9 electrically-powered hydro foiling ferry, Kermadec, entered commercial service with Auckland-based ferry and tourism operator Fullers360 earlier this year.
