Video: Big screen in Mercedes-Benz EQS
The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) hyperscreen features in the brand’s electric EQS due on sale later this year with an expected 700km range.
Mercedes-Benz New Zealand says it has no information on its arrival here at this stage.
Likely to be the largest automotive touchscreen available, the 56-inch curved screen unit stretches almost the entire width from the left to the right A-pillar – the hyperscreen revealed just before the virtual 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 11-14.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is added with software capable of learning, the display and operating concept adapting completely to its user and making personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions.
“With our MBUX Hyperscreen, a design vision becomes reality,” Daimler Group chief design officers Gorden Wagener says.
“We merge technology with design in a fascinating way that offers the customer unprecedented ease of use.”
Mercedes-Benz AG management board member and chief technical officer Sajjad Khan describes the hyperscreen as the car’s brain and nervous system.
“The MBUX Hyperscreen continually gets to know the customer better and delivers a tailored, personalised infotainment and operating offering before the occupant even has to click or scroll anywhere.”
The passenger also has its own display and operating area, making travel more pleasant and entertaining. With up to seven profiles, it is possible to customise the content.
If the passenger seat is unoccupied, the screen becomes a digital decorative part.
OLED technology is used in central and passenger displays with individual image points self-luminous; non-controlled image pixels remain switched off (appearing deep black). The active OLED pixels radiate with high colour brilliance.
All graphics are styled in a new blue/orange colour scheme. The classic cockpit display with two circular instruments has been reinterpreted with a digital laser sword in a glass lens.
The hyperscreen is intuitive and easy to operate. Important functions of the electric drive such as boost or recuperation are visualised in a new way.
The MBUX system proactively displays the right functions at the right time for the user, supported by AI.
Navigation, Radio/Media and Telephony categories are mainly used, so the navigation application is at the screen unit’s centre with full functionality.
More than 20 further functions – from the active massage programme through the birthday reminder, to the suggestion for the to-do list – are automatically offered with the aid of AI when they are relevant to the customer.
The user can accept or reject the respective suggestion with just one click with all MBUX suggestions linked to the user’s profile.
An example is the EQS chassis can be lifted to provide more ground clearance, useful for steep garage entrances.
MBUX remembers the GPS position at which the user made use of the Vehicle Lift-Up function and if the vehicle approaches the GPS position again it independently proposes to lift the EQS.
