China is becoming a major player in the EV world, so EVs and Beyond featured BYD New Zealand’s Warren Willmot (in China) and Boost Auto’s Anthony MacLean on their views after they visited Auto Shanghai in April.

Both expect more EVs from China to come to New Zealand and other global markets.

Willmot explains what he thinks BYD might send to New Zealand and development of its batteries, adding the BYD Dolphin already spotted here could be next after the Atto 3, followed by the Seal. An electric ute is also expected in Australia and New Zealand.

He believes the BYD Seagull and the luxury brand Denza 9 are unlikely to come here at this stage.

In the video, Willmot takes viewers on a tour of some BYD offerings.

MacLean says he was “overwhelmed” by the Auto Shanghai show which featured mainly EVs.

Sharing many photos from the show, MacLean says he didn’t see any Teslas, his “biggest shock” was the difference between the Chinese brands and others like those from Japan, adding the latter was “disappointing”.

MacLean’s “car of the show” was the Geely Galaxy Light concept, Geely also having several sub-brands there like Zeekr and Lynk and Co, while brands like Chery, SAIC, Li Auto, Neta and others also impressed.

“it really was a show for the Chinese brands,” MacLean explains.
