Volkswagen previews ID. Cross electric SUV ahead of launch

Volkswagen has revealed further details of its upcoming compact electric SUV, the ID. Cross, ahead of its European launch in late 2026 with a starting price of about €28,000 (NZ$55k).

The five-seat model is currently being shown in near-production form in Amsterdam, wearing a camouflage wrap as development continues.

Volkswagen says the ID. Cross is positioned as an affordable entry point into its electric range, targeting buyers seeking practical, everyday EV mobility at a lower price point.

The exterior introduces the brand’s “Pure Positive” design philosophy, featuring clean lines, balanced proportions and a more restrained appearance rather than overtly futuristic styling.

Inside, the cabin focuses on simplicity and usability, with materials and build quality intended to reflect higher-segment vehicles. A practical five-seat layout is supported by an emphasis on space efficiency, while large digital displays and straightforward controls are designed for ease of use.

Volkswagen plans to offer multiple drivetrain options, with three power outputs of 85kW, 99kW and 155kW. These will be paired with battery options of 37kWh and 52kWh (net), allowing the model to cater to both urban driving and longer-distance travel.

The ID. Cross will support DC fast charging at up to 90kW, increasing to 105kW with the larger battery.

Volkswagen says the model’s compact size, practical interior and accessible pricing are expected to position it strongly in the growing electric SUV segment.

The ID. Cross will join the company’s broader ID. line-up, which includes models such as the ID.3 and ID.4, and forms part of Volkswagen’s “BOOST 2030” strategy to expand its presence in sustainable mobility.

Globally, Volkswagen delivered about 4.7 million vehicles in 2025, including around 382,000 fully electric models.
