Wellington’s car-share Mevo eyes Auckland

Wellington-based car share company Mevo intends moving into the Auckland market, as founding director Erik Zydervelt says he is in talks with Auckland Transport to create a policy that allows ‘free-floating,’ similar to scooter sharing.

Since 2016, Mevo has been operating in Wellington. Auckland is already home to Yoogo and Cityhop, which require users to return cars to the base. Mevo has a different model.

“Businesses can save 30-40% of their taxi spend by using Mevo for business travel, while individuals can save 75% compared with the cost of average yearly ownership,” says Zydervelt.

Mevo is also proposing a similar policy what it has with the Wellington City Council where it pays parking fees in bulk the month after.

“The research shows for every one-way or floating car we have, between five and 15 are taken off the road that would otherwise be privately owned,” Zydervelt says.

Mevo has 189 business customers and will have 45 new Wellington charging stations for its hybrid vehicles this year.

Researchers Frost & Sullivan say the number of people using car-sharing services globally is expected to increase from about six million in 2017 to almost 18 million by 2025.

The value of the car-sharing industry is expected to reach $15.7 billion within the next six years.
