You can now rent EVs with Thrifty

Thrifty Car Rental has announced the option to rent an electric vehicle in their Auckland and Christchurch depots.

Clients have a sustainable and environmentally friendly option of selecting an EV rental car for use in the city.

“Not only is the electric vehicle option a great environmental choice but it offers customers a new level of convenience,” says Thrifty general manager Tony Mortensen.

Unlike petrol or diesel powered vehicles, our electric fleet can be returned to the depot with an almost empty fuel tank and there will not be any additional fuel charges.”

From March 1, Thrifty has offered the Hyundai Ioniq, which has a 200km verified range and zero exhaust emissions as a rental option. The vehicle has an 88kWh Motor and 28kWh battery.

“Thrifty is one of the first rental car companies in New Zealand to offer a fuel electric vehicle option. The cars are quiet and user friendly and provide drivers with a chance to have a taste of the future and feel good about a low environmental footprint,” adds Mortensen.

There are charging stations available in Auckland and Christchurch CBDs, where electric vehicles have priority parks. It takes approximately 30 minutes to the car from empty to 80% full, and costs $10 per 100km. Payment is made by signing up to the fast charging network, and Thrifty provides customers with full instructions about charging, location stations, and payment.

Mortensen encourages clients to give EVs a try, but has tips for consumers who are travelling longer distances.

“It helps to make a few pre-journey logistical preparations. This includes planning the journey within the vehicles 200km range and if travelling a greater distance, then drivers should lock in the location of rapid chargers en route.”
