New Auckland mayor Phil Goff commenced his new role yesterday by saying his office will save money – starting with the mayoral car.

This will see him downgrade from his current Holden Calais to a fully electric Nissan Leaf that’s already in the Auckland Council car pool according to Newshub article ‘Phil Goff turns Holden over for a new Leaf’.

Goff points out in the article that this downgrade is part of an effort to cut at least 3% percent from all council budgets.

“It’s something that’s easy on the environment and something that shows the mayor of the city is going to lead the way in terms of electrification and in terms of reducing our carbon emissions,” he says.

His first day on the job included meeting with the council executive team, with interest rising as to who he will appoint as his deputy.
