ACC rates cut for EVs as PHEVs rescued from loophole

The rate Accident Compensation Commission levies are charged at are set to drop, from $86.50 a year to just $18 dollars.

The move is aimed at encouraging their uptake, and also takes car of a loophole in the law that has seen plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) pay more.

PHEVs have been billed as ‘non-petrol vehicles’, meaning they paid more than their conventional counterparts.

They will join the $18 rate with full battery electric vehicles.

“The change to the electric vehicle levy is an interim measure which supports the Government’s programme encouraging people to make the switch to electric vehicles, and allows further work to be done on how the ACC levy system accommodates new vehicle technologies,” says acting minister for ACC Nathan Guy Guy.

The new levies begin in July 2017.
