Record-breaking EV effort in Christchurch

A new record for the number of New Zealand EVs gathered in one place has been set on the Leading The Charge tour.

On the tour’s Christchurch stop over the weekend, 103 EVs parked up at the University of Canterbury, beating the record of 62 EVs set in Whangarei earlier this month.

Tour member Martin Kane says it was an amazing atmosphere, with several hundred people gathering to check out the technology.

Once the record was confirmed, the cars dispersed around the city to places like the Botanical Gardens and New Brighton for test drives and demonstrations.

“It was very, very busy. The Tesla had the biggest queue for a drive,” he says.

Other models including several Leafs were available for people to run around in.

“Many people were impressed with the acceleration of EVs. The drives convinced many people, it’s the way they’re going to go in the future.”

Today the tour is in Greymouth, before heading to Westport tonight.
