Hyundai unveils all-electric bus with 290km range

An all-electric bus, the Elec City, has been unveiled at the Hyundai Truck and Bus Mega Fair in Korea this week.

The bus features a 290km range enabled by a massive 256kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack, Electrek reports.

China’s BYD and America’s Proterra are considered market leaders in electric buses, but more companies are moving into the segment.

Electric buses are now cheaper than diesel/CNG and could dominate the market within 10 years, Proterra chief executive officer Ryan Popple says.

Hyundai is the latest to take advantage of the shift.
“Hyundai Motor has achieved a lot in the eco-friendly vehicle field,” its commercial vehicle research and development division senior vice president Yeongduck Tak says. “We continue to invest heavily to ensure zero-emission technology for all commercial vehicles.”

The company plans to start mass production of the bus soon.
One of the biggest automakers still pushing for fuel cell hydrogen, this shows Hyundai is getting serious about electric vehicles.

Earlier this year it launched the Ioniq Electric.
Hyundai’s also preparing to bring out an all-electric sport utility vehicle (SUV).
