Waymo’s self-driving truck first sighting

One of Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving trucks has been seen on public roads for the first time.

The light blue truck has the Waymo insignia, and the self-driving hardware suite.

As reported by Jalopnik

the trucks have a very similar setup to that which can be seen on the company’s Chrysler Pacifica minivans.

There’s a large LIDAR, a pair of ultrasonic sensors, and what appears to be a radar up front. Other sensors may be on the truck too.

An earlier report confirmed Waymo was manually driving just one truck on public roads to collect data. The contributed photo of the truck shows it is apparently a Peterbilt 579.

It’s possible the company has moved beyond collecting data to letting the rig drive itself in some limited capacity, but Waymo has not officially commented on that.

In its move to make self-driving cars mainstream, the Alphabet division recently signed a deal with Lyft which will likely involve pilot projects and other product development efforts.
