China could get Toyota mass producing electric cars

Toyota may start mass production of EVs in China in 2019.
The Japanese car maker is considering the move to comply with the Chinese government’s plans to impose production quotas for “new energy cars” as early as 2018, Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review reports.
It says, without quoting sources, that Toyota Motor is undecided how many electric cars it might produce in China but will probably concentrate on SUVs which are popular there and will take a shorter time to bring to the market.
Toyota produced an electric SUV, the RAV4 EV, but this was discontinued.

The automaker has been pursuing hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles, but it is turning to batteries as well to meet current zero emission standards.
