Wanted: Wellington EV owners for home charging trial

A trial to assess EV owners’ home charging behaviour and how they affect electricity demand is being conducted by Wellington Electricity.

Those involved will help shape the future electricity lines prices for EV charging and assist with the adoption of EVs in New Zealand, the company says.

To participate, households must have one or more EVs they regularly charge at home and live in
Wellington Electricity’s area (Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata, Eastbourne, Porirua, Mana, Plimmerton and Pukerua Bay).

Those keen to take part also need to have an advanced electricity meter in their home and give Wellington Electricity permission to obtain the last two years of their household electricity consumption data from their past and current electricity retailer.

Information and practical advice about charging off peak will be provided by Wellington Electricity to determine what effect this has on participants’ electricity use.

Participants will be surveyed about how they charge their EV, about their home, and about their views on electricity pricing for EVs.

Information will only be used for the trial purposes and not shared with anyone other than consultants employed by Wellington Electricity for this project.

Participants will receive a $50 gift card as a thank you, sent after the trial finishes in October.
