Electric car use encouraged on work trips

More than 100 companies are encouraging employees to use electric cars on work trips.

The Electric Day Pass (EDP), launched at Christchurch International Airport in May, enables frequent fliers travelling between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch during the week to book a free electric Volkswagen e-Golf for their visit, Stuff reports.

The programme involves Volkswagen, Europcar rentals and the three main centres’ airports.

At least 100 corporates – including AMP, Air New Zealand and Icebreaker – have signed up.

AMP New Zealand managing director Blair Vernon says the day pass is a good way to normalise the electric driving experience.

Europcar NZ general manager Stephen Jones says the programme was developed to acknowledge the future of motoring lies in sustainable options and that more e-cars may be introduced.

Two electric cars are available at the Europcar stations at each of the three airports.
