Mazda outlines sustainable future, including EVs

From 2019, Mazda will start introducing electric vehicles and other electric drive technologies.

It will focus on regions that use a high ratio of clean energy for power generation or restrict certain vehicles to reduce air pollution.

The company also plans what it says will be the world’s first commercial petrol engine to use compression ignition.

The fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston and ensures a lean burn that improves engine efficiency up to 20-30% over the current Skyactive-G engine, the automaker says.

It’s calling the engine the Skyactiv-X and says the technology is part of a futuristic vision for the year 2030 dubbed “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030”.

Through conservation initiatives, Mazda aims to create a sustainable future in which people and cars coexist.
That means expanding measures for carbon dioxide reduction, considering emissions over the vehicle’s entire life cycle.

Mazda says it will continue efforts to perfect the internal combustion engine, “which will help power the majority of cars worldwide for many years to come and can therefore make the greatest contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions”.

It will combine the results with effective electrification technologies.
