Solar roof cells could power in-car functions

The power could drive items like the air conditioning or seat heaters.

They’re also designed to work well in dim light and hot temperatures.

Prototypes could be on cars by 2018. It’s possible the technology might be used in EVs to improve driving range and charge a vehicle’s main traction battery.

Diesel engine maker Cummins, for instance, says there’s potential to put solar panels on the trailer roof of its first fully electric truck to send energy to the battery pack.

Alta Devices, an American subsidiary of Chinese photovoltaic specialist Hanergy, makes the solar cells in California.
