EVs to the forefront at Frankfurt motor show

It’s a sign of the automotive times.

Electric vehicles (EVs) dominate the IAA Cars 2017 Frankfurt motor show from September 14-24.

An EV is on almost every stand at the show.

Two years after the diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen is among German-based automakers promoting the zero emissions drive with a promise to offer 80 EVs by 2025 across its brands, which include Skoda, Audi, Bentley and Porsche.

VW aims to sell three million pure electric vehicles a year in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz revealed a compact EV under its EQ label, the EQA, and showed its prototype battery-fuel cell hybrid SUV which can run on hydrogen.

BMW presented its I Vision Dynamics concept EV to add to its i3 and i8 electric range by 2021. It aims to have 25 electrified cars by 2025, with half of them all-electric.

The company expects to sell more than 100,000 electrified vehicles this year.

Hybrids are also on display, with alternatives to diesel and petrol power offered as countries like Britain and France move to limit combustion engine-only vehicles by 2040.

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are well represented in a popular segment, while luxury cars also feature at the show.

Driverless technology is coming along, and could well be featured more at the next Frankfurt auto show in 2019.
