EV registrations continue climbing
August was another record month for EV registrations.
Actual registrations totalled 4121 – up from 3797 in July.
Adding in NZ Post’s electric Paxter delivery vehicles brings the August total to 4541 according to Ministry of Transport statistics. The August target of 3175 was well exceeded – with or without Paxters.
“These are encouraging figures,” The Better NZ Trust’s Dee West says. “There are many events being planned all over New Zealand for International Drive Electric Week. So we hope many more people will get to ride and drive in EVs this month and experience how great these cars are.”
In August, 331 vehicles were registered, made up of 240 used import vehicles and 91 used vehicles.
In the new vehicle market, the most popular electric vehicle was the Tesla Model X on 21 units, followed by the Model S on 15.
The Hyundai Ioniq was third on 10, while one pure-ev BMW i3 was registered.
The Mitsubishi Outlander was the most popular plug-in hybrid on 22 units, followed by the Audi A3 on eight and BMW X5 on five.
Leading the import market, and the most popular electric vehicle overall, was the Nissan Leaf on 175 units.
Second place was the closely related Nissan e-NV200 on 12 vehicles, mostly headed for the Foodstuffs fleet, followed by the Renault Zoe on two.
