Drones could spark up EVs
A flying charging station might one day give your depleted EV a boost.
Amazon has a US patent for drones than can join on to EVs to extend their range.
Its application included an engineer’s drawing of a robot recharging drone that could land on an EV to provide a charge up.
The patent’s timely as countries prepare for more EVs and autonomous vehicles, and it would help remove range anxiety.
Amazon’s patent envisions an autonomous recharging vehicle being summoned to an agreed site or range of locations.
The buzz is the roving recharger could be a self-piloting aerial drone or crew-less ground vehicle.
It would dock with the EV, possibly in a fixed location or while moving.
Some media speculate what range the drones will have and how it might affect public EV charging facilities, but there’s little detail yet.
