Aimee-Wiley-MIA-ceo

Last year was a record one for new low emission vehicle registrations with nearly 60,000 LEVs registered.

So says Motor Industry Association (MIA) chief executive Aimee Wiley, adding the 59,952 LEV registrations is a 45% increase on 2022.

Top selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) models in 2023 were the Tesla Model Y (3936 units, 18.7% share), BYD Atto 3 (3171

units, 15.1% share) and MG 4 (1793 units, 8.5% share).

The MG 4 led the field in December with 623 units registered (18.5% share), followed by the BYD Atto 3 (429 units,

12.8% share) and Tesla Model Y (358 units, 10.6% share).

Top plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) last year were the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2777 units, 30.9% share), Mitsubishi

Outlander (1934 units, 21.5% share) and Kia Sorrento (718 units, 8% share), the Outlander leading in December with 320 units (32.4% share), the Eclipse Cross ((249 units, 25.2% share) and Ford Escape (133 units, 13.5% share).

With the end of the Clean Car Discount, it is unsurprising that December was a record month and 2023 a record year for LEV registrations, says Wiley.

She says LEVs formed a 72.5% share of the total industry in December (7077 units).

BEVs accounted for 21,621 registrations (14.5% share) in 2023, PHEVs 8988 (6% share), hybrids 29,343s (19.7% share) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles 89,054 (59.8% share).
