Electric hydro foiling ferry begins commercial service

The first Vessev VS-9 electrically-powered hydro foiling ferry, Kermadec, has entered commercial service with Auckland-based ferry and tourism operator Fullers360. 

From January 23, the nine-metre-long Kermadec will carry passengers on tourism trips across Auckland’s waterways. It is the first time in the world that a certified electric hydro foiling vessel has begun commercial services.

It will transport passengers at a service speed of 25 knots. The VS–9 has a 50 nautical mile range (57 miles/92.6km) thanks to hydro foiling technology adapted from America’s Cup racing yachts.

Passengers can board the Kermadec, which offers tours of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour from Wednesday to Sunday, with sailings at 10 am and 2 pm. 

“We are incredibly proud to see the VS–9 enter service with Fullers360,” Vessev chief executive Eric Laakman says. 

“It is the first electric vessel to enter the Fullers360 fleet and represents an enormous step on their path to being net zero by 2040. We’re thrilled that the public can now share in what we’ve been experiencing since the launch of the VS—9 in May,” he says.

“The Vessev VS–9 is a game-changer for our fleet and our passengers,” Fullers360 chief commercial officer Tim O’Halloran says. 

“Its innovative design and sustainable operation perfectly suit Auckland’s maritime landscape, and we are excited to welcome our first passengers onboard”.

Vessev and Fullers360 aim to further advance marine sustainability and innovation with the VS–18, a 100-seater electric hydro foiling commuter ferry, on the drawing board.
