Another EV charger at Nelson Airport?
Nelson MP Nick Smith has responded to our story about him running flat in his EV at Nelson Airport.
Invited to comment on the August 15 article about his Facebook post where he confessed to “feeling goofy” after running out of battery power in his Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Smith says he didn’t use the airport’s EV charger outside the office because he assumed it was for airport staff and not a public parking spot.
Smith says he’s discussing the possibility of a public EV charging station with the airport, which is being redeveloped, probably nearer the public car park and terminal.
He bought his EV 10 years ago and says he believes it’s one of the oldest EVs in the country (“I was told so by Mitsubishi when I bought it”) and that the i-MiEV is still going strong.

VERY impressive to have a 10 year old EV, still running although I assume with more limited battery range now, so understandable if get caught short sometimes. And if Plug Share doesn’t show a charger as being available in the vicinity and there is no well signed public charging station marked then I would be reluctant to plug into some random charger if there was no pay option or not knowing if I am allowed to use it or not. Don’t want to be seen as stealing electricity.
