AT Local EV rides popular
The electric vehicle rideshare service helping get Aucklanders between Devonport, Bayswater and Stanley Bay ferry terminals had a record 300 rides daily in the fortnight before Christmas.
AT Local has proved to be a popular service, the trial due to end around April after launching in November 2018.
The trial was extended six months from October 2019 so Auckland Transport (AT) could better understand the service’s summer performance.
A weekend service was scrapped because ridership was below the benchmark, while Friday night services were extended to later times following customer feedback.
AT Local runs three Hyundai Ioniq cars and three LDV EV80 vans.

Regardless of the number of rides before Xmas, this service could have been done using Uber or Ola and could have saved taxpayers 100s of thousands of dollars. It hasn’t been a cost effective exercise at all and has only benefited a few. If the goal of EVs is to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, we need to be using intelligence and common sense in the application.
