Battery buy for Tesla

Tesla has completed acquisition of California-based Maxwell Technologies which produces ultracapacitors and batteries.

That’s expected to bring improvements in Tesla’s battery technology, with Maxwell previously developing dry electrode technology that could create ultracapacitors to store large amounts of electrical charge without losing energy.

Dry electrode tech can have 300Wh/kg density and lead to 500Wh/kg battery development, Maxwell says. That compares with a Tesla Model 3 battery of 272Wh/litre producing 207wh/kg, Extreme Tech

reports.

Ultracapacitors are viewed as a possible alternative to present batteries, said to be safer and more reliable.

Tesla could use Maxwell’s technology to potentially improve its batteries.
