BMW i wins category at International Engine of the Year awards

The engine that powers the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid has triumphed in its class at the International Engine of the Year Awards.

It picked up top prize in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre displacement category for the third year in a row.

The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170 kW and drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery,and sends its power to the front axle, BMW says.

It enables an electric range of up to 37 kilometres and a top speed of 120 km/h.

Meanwhile, fuel consumption sits at 2.1 litres per 100km.
