BMW sells 10,000 plus EVs in September

BMW Group sold 10,786 plug-in cars globally during September, the first time it’s topped 10,000 EVs in a month.

And it says sales of electrified vehicles are higher in the first nine months of this year than for the whole of 2016.

A total of 10,786 (up 50.5%) BMW i, BMW iPerformance and Mini electric vehicles were delivered in September, bringing the year-to-date total to 68,687 (up 64.2%), BMW Group says.

The company has nine electrified models so far.

While the i3 and i8 are its main electric cars, the group says the BMW 5-Series plug-in hybrid sedan is a driver, accounting in some markets for up to a third of BMW 5 Series sedan sales.

“We are pleased to see the ongoing, strong sales development of our unrivalled range of electrified vehicles, with independent reports confirming our leadership in the field of electromobility,” BMW AG management board member for sales Dr Ian Robertson says. “The BMW Group has the largest share of the electrified market worldwide.”

Robertson says BMW Group is well on track to deliver its target of 100,000 by year-end.

Further plans include bringing out 12 different EVs by 2025, including an all-electric version of the X3 SUV.
