BYD New Zealand is planning to unveil its first ute at Fieldays in June of next year, with deliveries beginning in the third quarter.

The ute has hit headlines in recent weeks with sketches appearing in Chinese compliance documents, and BYD’s Australian distributor discussing the vehicle with media at a show in Japan.

Although the brand initially launched as an all-electric operator, it will introduce plug-in hybrid options early next year, and the ute will follow suit.

BYD Auto New Zealand brand manager Warren Willmot says that initially, the vehicle will utilise the brand’s ‘DM-i’ system. This pairs a mid-size battery with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a generator, and two electric motors. The drive is predominantly electric, with the petrol engine only taking over at higher speeds.

The vehicle will offer a range of drive modes, including the ability to conserve power until reaching a worksite or campsite – a feature dubbed ‘tradie mode’ in Australia.

Estimates suggest an EV-only range of up to 100km. The vehicle will support both AC and DC charging. Additionally, Vehicle-to-load will be standard, as it is with other BYD models.

A full EV version will follow around 12 months later.

Willmot notes that the size of the ute is comparable to vehicles like the Ranger or Hilux. It will be equipped with all-wheel drive and boasts “full off-road capability.”

Performance-wise, the ute is expected to impress, achieving 0-100km in under 6 seconds. Willmot mentions that its tow capacity will be a minimum of 3000kg, possibly more.

Reflecting on the brand’s foray into this segment, Willmot expresses enthusiasm. “We’re excited about entering the largest segment in the automotive market. We’ve garnered immense interest from major fleets across the country,” he says.

He adds, “Of course, we have other models to launch before the ute and several after. Our aim is to offer a BYD low emission vehicle for every segment of the Kiwi light vehicle market.”

In terms of pricing, Willmot was a bit more tight lipped, stating only to “look at our current model pricing compared to the rest of the market. We offer cutting edge technology at affordable pricing, while at the same time taking care to maintain future resale value. Expect us to to have a compelling vehicle at with very competitive pricing.”
