The long-expected return of Chery vehicles to New Zealand – though under the new Omoda brand – is getting a little closer with confirmation of its initial range.

The name Omoda is a fusion of the letter ‘O’, emblematic of life and oxygen, and “Moda,” which translates to “modern.”

The brand will commence sales early next year with the C5 and E5 SUVs. While the C5 comes equipped with a choice of 1.5T or 1.6T powertrains, the E5 will mark Omoda’s foray into the full EV segment.

The E5 uses a 61kWh LFP battery, with a 150kW electric motor powering the front wheels. The brand claims a near Tesla-rivalling efficiency of 15kWh/100km, and a WLTP range of up to 450km.

The C5 carries a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) rating, which the brand will no doubt be hoping will extend to the E5.

In just six months post its Australian launch, Omoda has already made a significant mark, registering sales of 4513 units.

Earlier this year, Chery New Zealand country manager Sheldon Humphries confirmed that 10 dealerships have been appointed but are yet to be named by the Chinese manufacturer in what will eventually become a network of more than 30 sites nationwide.

Humphries said it is Chery’s future intention to market both the Omoda and Jaecoo new energy vehicle (NEV) model ranges in New Zealand.

“Even with the election result, Omoda is still committed to offering New Zealanders low/zero emission options,” he adds.

“Omoda will have some petrol (ICE) models as part of our mix going forward, but for every petrol model in our range on offer, we plan to counter it by offering a hybrid/PHEV or EV alternative.”

Humphries says Omoda is working towards having 15 dealers open at launch and adding to that figure in 2024, with more details around dealer appointments made public in coming weeks.
