Confirmed: BYD expands NZ lineup with four new models

BYD will launch four new vehicles in New Zealand in early 2026, significantly expanding the Chinese brand’s local range across multiple segments.

As earlier reported by EVs and Beyond, the expansion includes two fully electric models – the ATTO 1 and ATTO 2 – alongside two plug-in hybrid SUVs, the SEALION 5 and SEALION 8 DM-I.

The ATTO 1 is a compact city-focused hatchback that has achieved global sales of more than one million units. The model is sold as the Seagull in China and Dolphin Surf in Europe.

BYD describes the ATTO 1 as designed for New Zealand’s city streets, offering “a sharp, modern look and nimble handling without the premium price tag.”

The ATTO 2 is positioned as a compact SUV that combines everyday practicality with advanced battery technology, targeting drivers who value versatility, safety and style.

“The expanded ATTO line-up is all about breaking down barriers to EV ownership,” says Warren Willmot, General Manager of BYD Auto NZ.

“This vehicle will redefine what an entry-level EV can be in this market — affordable, efficient, and enjoyable to drive. We believe it will play a major role in helping more New Zealanders and businesses take their first step into electric mobility.”

Plug-in hybrid SUVs target family market

The SEALION 5 is a mid-sized SUV powered by BYD’s dual-mode intelligent (DM-i) technology, combining electric platform efficiency with extended range and petrol-hybrid drivetrain flexibility.

The SEALION 8 will be BYD’s largest SUV in the New Zealand market, featuring seven seats and DM-i plug-in hybrid technology. BYD says it blends bold exterior styling with a tech-forward interior designed for growing families.

“The SEALION 5 and SEALION 8 give customers even more choice in how they want to experience electrification,” Willmot says.

“Whether it’s an affordable commuter or a seven-seat family SUV, BYD will have a solution to fit every stage of life. This is just the beginning of what we have planned for New Zealand.”

The four new models will join BYD’s existing New Zealand range, which includes the Shark 6, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Dolphin, Seal and Atto 3.

BYD has been operating in New Zealand since 2022 and is distributed locally by Ateco Automotive.
