COVID-19 KOs April EV stats

April EV figures were up – just – as the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions dealt a blow to EV registrations.

Only 30 more EVs were added to the previous month’s total of 20,306, bringing April’s total to 20,336, latest Ministry of Transport registration statistics show.

That’s well down on previous months’ increases of around 500 or more and means a struggle to hit the end of year target of 32,000 EVs on New Zealand roads,

April’s poor showing could heavily impact on the goal of achieving 64,000 by the end of 2021 unless there’s a massive pick up during the next 18 months.

New light pure EVs went up the most in April, rising by 15 to reach 4292, while used light pure electrics rose 11 to 10,992.

An increase of just two was recorded for both new light plug-in hybrids (3142) and used light PHEVs (1729).

Heavy EVs at 181 registrations didn’t budge from the March figures which were only one up on February.
