E-riders closer to Auckland harbour crossing
Auckland Harbour Bridge’s shared pathway and associated SeaPath link to Takapuna could be started in late 2020.
Construction funding approval is being sought for all work by the end of 2019, with the earliest possible timeframe for the start of preliminary works construction later next year, the NZ Transport Agency says.
The bridge section will start in Westhaven before crossing the Waitemata Harbour and then connect to the SeaPath section which extends to Takapuna, it says.
About 470 submission were received after consultation in August and September on ramp and lift/stair options for the southern and northern pathway connections.
While 91% supported the ramp concepts, many suggested the lift/stair option was unsuitable for cyclists.
Some want clear separation of cyclists from pedestrians while a few say interaction between e-bikes and scooters with other path users needs to be considered.
Nearly 300 people (63%) in the feedback say they would use the path for exercise and recreation while almost 150 (32%) intend to commute by bike.
Geotechnical investigations have started at both ends and procurement has begun for a detailed design and construction partner for the alliance that will deliver the AHB Shared Path section of the connection.
“Seeking early contractor involvement will allow us to move forward with this project as quickly as possible as the design can be further developed alongside the construction team that will build this connection across the harbour. An announcement on the preferred alliance team will be made in mid-2020,” the NZTA says.
It adds the AHB Shared Path detailed business case is nearly complete and will be going to the NZTA board for endorsement at the end of the year.
“Both projects are moving forward together into the design and consenting phase.
“Construction funding approval is being sought for all work by the end of the year, with the earliest possible timeframe for the start of early works construction in late 2020.”
The agency says it will continue to work with partners, stakeholders and the community during 2020 to develop the look and feel of the path and surrounds within neighbourhoods.
