Electric dirt bike event planned in Waikato
New Zealand’s first major electric dirt bike event is planned at Thundercross Valley Dirt Bike Park, Glen Murray, in the Waikato on Saturday April 5, 2025, 9am-5pm.
The event is sponsored by New Zealand’s official Surron electric dirt bikes importer, with some officials from the Chinese manufacturer attending.
The event is free to the public but limited to 250, says participant John Willams, adding more than 200 people have registered.
“It is to be a family day of riding and spectating – not a competition race day.”
Surron is providing a selection of more than 30 electric bikes for people to test ride, including bikes designed for youths.
Two models of Surron’s popular off-road bikes adapted for farm use will be on display.
More than 50 participants have registered that will be bringing their own electric trail and enduro motorcycles, says Williams.
“Thundercross offers a unique opportunity to enjoy dirt bike riding in a magnificent 750-acre (303.5-hectare) private park,” he says.
“They have tracks to suit everyone, from Learners to Advanced riders.”
Riders can bring their own bike or hire one from a fleet of 17 bikes (50cc to 300cc) as well as a range of Surron electric dirt bikes for riders 157cm and more.
No motorcycle licence or experience is necessary.
“No matter your age or fitness level, our experienced instructors will teach you to independently ride a dirt bike around the beautiful private park,” says Williams. “Advanced tuition also available.
“James (Fowlie) is one of New Zealand’s most experienced dirt bike coaches – you will be in good hands with his team.”
In 1999, Thundercross owner and founder Fowlie created the tracks on the family farm so their teenage children could have somewhere to practice and progress their dirt biking skills.
The park opened to the public in 2001 and the tracks have been popular with locals, domestic and international visitors.
Set in rolling Waikato countryside, Thundercross is an hour from Auckland airport to the north, Hamilton to the south and 1.5 hours from Hobbiton.
