Electric economy model from Renault next year
A new “affordable” urban electric Renault K-ZE has been announced by Groupe Renault for 2019.
It’s described as having an “SUV-inspired”`sporty design with a 250km (NEDC) range, although some overseas media predict it will have a real-world range closer to 190km.
The car company has also revealed further electrification plans for plug-in hybrid and hybrid versions of the Clio, Megane and Captur in 2020.
The K-ZE will be available in China first, Groupe Renault chairman and chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn says.
He shared Renault’s vision for next-generation, on-board experiences with the group’s “augmented editorial experience” (AEX) to link premium content with new mobility, previewed at the Paris Motor Show on October 2.
The K-ZE will include rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and a central screen with navigation and other services.
It has a double charging system compatible with domestic plugs and public infrastructures, the group says.
The small car will be made by e-GT New Energy Automotive Co, the joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group and Nissan created to develop and produce competitive EVs for the Chinese market.
As mobility continues open up new possibilities for connected and autonomous cars, users will seek more sophisticated on-board experiences to maximise travel time – personally and professionally, Ghosn says.
Through Renault’s investment stake in French media group Challenges, Ghosn says AEX will combine content, connectivity services, media and mobility, which will turn travel time into a learning experience.
“Experimenting with Groupe Challenges, we imagine what tomorrow’s connected, personalised mobility experience could be”, Ghosn says.
“Access to premium content delivered through unique on-board experiences for drivers and passengers will become key differentiators.”
Renault’s stand at the Paris Motor Show includes a full-size capsule with four scenarios in a 222-degree projection so visitors can experience how their daily time spent in a car might be different.
The AEX capsule sits alongside a new Renault luxury concept car, which is an electric, autonomous, connected robo-vehicle.
More information about the K-ZE, including pricing, is expected to be available closer to when the EV is released next year.
