Electric ute and SUV from Rivian

US electric vehicle maker Rivian will produce two “electric adventure vehicles” – a dual-cab RiT ute and an RiS SUV.

Company founder and chief executive officer RJ Scaringe unveiled the R1T, which is aimed more at outdoors enthusiasts than for tradies and carries up to five passengers.

Production is expected to begin late 2020 at Rivian’s Illinois plant with pricing estimated to start around US$61,500 (NZ$88,885).

Both models have a quad-motor system producing 147kW of power to each wheel.

Two variants are planned – a 135kWh and 180kWh – with an estimated 500km and 640km range respectively.

A base model with a 105kWh battery and 370km range is expected later.

The RiT can reach 100km/h in three seconds and reportedly has a five-tonne tow rating while able to carry about 800kg.

A “skateboard” platform means a low centre of gravity for better handling and a double wishbone suspension up front and a rear multi-link suspension are expected to provide a smooth ride even over difficult terrain.

With a view towards more autonomous driving, the RiT includes some self-driving technology up to about Level 3.

A large amount of gear, such as golf bags and ski equipment, can be carried front and rear, plus in a “gear tunnel”, with surfboards and bikes also able to be transported on a flexible cross-bar system.

The RiS SUV can carry up to seven passengers and has similar specs to the RiT, along with 3500kg towing capacity, 330-litre front trunk volume and 180-litre rear bin storage.

Rivian aims to sell the EVs over the internet, with pre-orders already being taken, and a subscription service is considered as well.
