EV charging cable complaint

A complaint from a consumer about an EV charging cable supplied by a dealer has been made to the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal of New Zealand.

That’s the understanding of the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) in a further warning to members to follow correct procedures with such devices.

“We believe the issue is that a dealer has supplied an original equipment manufacturer’s charging cable that has been adapted with a NZ style plug fitted,” VIA says after it was contacted by the tribunal.

“This is not permitted under the Electrical Wiring Regulations.

“VIA advises members to ensure they only supply EV charging cables that are compliant with NZ Standards.”

It believes the cable is of Japanese origin.

WorkSafe NZ has information and a brochure on its website about safe EV charging, VIA technical manager Malcolm Yorston says.

He says the latest VIA alert is a reminder to members “they have to do it right”.

Yorston says the VIA has previously warned members about following correct procedures in such matters.

“The Consumer Guarantees Act requires goods (vehicle and accessories) to be fit for purpose when sold,” VIA adds.

“If a charging cable does not meet the requirements of the NZ statutes it is not fit for purpose.”
