An electric vehicle charging system using kinetic energy to charge an EV in minutes is being unveiled at the eMove360 trade fair for connected cars in Munich.

Israeli start-up Chakratec is revealing its Chak Charge (C2) at the October 16-18 event, and also has it at the European Utility Week show in Vienna in November.

Chakratec says its patented and sustainable kinetic battery technology enables unlimited charge cycles and is environmentally friendly.

Using flywheels (one provides 3kWh) that spin in a vacuum chamber, kinetic energy is converted back to electricity when an EV is plugged in, charging taking just minutes.

It allows many EVs to be serviced at the same time in one station.

Chakratec says it is focussing on enabling fast EV charging anywhere, and that its energy storage technology has a more than 20-year operating lifetime.

“Our technology is boosting deployment of fast EV charging stations anywhere, especially in locations with a weak grid, for example in rural areas,” Chakratec business development and operations vice-president Nir Zohar says.

“We are literally boosting eMobilty.”

Five installations in Europe are expected to be running by the end of 2018.

The technology can have multiple applications, such as grid stabilisation, peak shaving and other grid services, Chakratec says.

The company received the prestigious NREL 2018 outstanding venture award by the Industry growth forum, shortly after grabbing the eMobility Battery Storage award at the 2017 eMove360.

At the Vienna show from November 6-8, visitors can talk to representatives of Wien Energie which is deploying the first kinetic power booster and charging system in the region, Chakratec says.
