EV charging station guidelines online

Guidelines for installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers are now available.

On the New Zealand Transport Agency website, it outlines the three modes available.

Mode two is only suitable for private commercial use, with the EV connected to the AC supply network (mains) using a standardised single-phase or three-phase socket outlet.

It has a maximum charging capacity of 22kw and could be used in premises like hotels or fleet car parks.

Modes three and four are both suitable for public use, with the chargers permanently connected to the electricity supply.

Mode three sees the EV connected to the AC supply network (mains) using a charging station, with a maximum charging capacity of 43kw.

Meanwhile, in mode four the EV is connected to the AC supply, network (mains) using a charging station with an off-board charger.

This mode supplies the EV through a DC supply, powering up the car more quickly, with a charging capability of up to 50kW.

The website also advises that checks need to be made to make sure the product can be used in New Zealand, while a licence is required by the person doing the installation.
