EV fleet reaches 5341

Electric vehicle numbers in New Zealand have well exceeded the 5000 mark, figures released on November 6 show.

A total 5341 were recorded in October by the Ministry of Transport, continuing the year’s upward trend from 2751 in January.

In terms of fleet size, most (2690) are in the used light pure electric category, 268 more than previously recorded to the end of September.

By comparison, new EVs are up to 1113 – 108 more than recorded up to the previous month’s end.

New light plug-in hybrids are at 1129, up 28, while used plug-in hybrids reached 335, up 26.

Heavy EVs were at 74, with 75 the previous total.

Monthly registration comparisons show 294 used light EVs registered in October, while 247 were registered in September. For new light EVs, 136 were registered in October compared with 89 the previous month.

EV ownership is concentrated in Auckland, followed by Wellington, Otago, Northland, Nelson/Marlborough and Canterbury.

The majority of EVs are from Japan, used Nissan Leafs still the most popular, with a proportion of EVs coming from the United Kingdom.

More individuals own light EVs than do companies, and pure EVs are more popular than plug-in hybrids.
