EV numbers soaring worldwide

September set a record with about 122,800 EV unit sales recorded that month worldwide.

That’s 19% above the previous all-time best, set last December with 102,800 units.

And the September figure is 46% higher than for September 2016.

At 765,000, EV sales are rapidly nearing the million mark for this year.

In the third quarter of this year 66% of EV sales were pure electric (BEV) and 34% were plug-in hybrids (PHEVS), EV-Volumes.com reports.

Growth was influenced by the Chinese market, the USA and Europe close behind.

High sales of the Chinese BAIC EC series ensured BEVs were 66% of all delivered plug-ins.

Germany, and many small markets, are growing by over 100% in volume year-on-year (YoY).

The Tesla Model S remains the year-to-date (YTD) winner in the rapidly growing market, delivering some 41,000 units YTD in a total market of 765,000 units.

However, its sales are down a little YoY, while the Model X is showing positive growth.

The small Zhi Dou EV has impressive growth numbers, and the BJEV (BAIC) EC180 EV is breaking all records in China.

The Toyota Prius Prime (PHEV) proved an instant top seller in Japan, hauling up that market which is also helped by the new Nissan Leaf.

Fourth quarter growth is expected to see the worldwide trend continue. The Tesla Model 3 is likely to boost the growth in the USA, and the end of the financial year is forecast to bring an additional sales rise for most models.

While 2017 will be the first year over a million plug-ins are sold, next year is predicted to be “the year of EVs” with Tesla Model 3 production and new generations of other EVs coming.

The top ten EVs are, in order, the BAIC EC 180 EV, Tesla Model S, Zhi Dou D1/D2 EV, BYD Song PHEV, Toyota Prius Gen 2 PHEV, Tesla Model X, Nissan Leaf EV, Geely Emgrand EV, Chery eQ EV, and BMW i3 EV/EREV.G
