EV registrations reach 21,568

EV registrations continue to climb back to near pre COVID-19 levels with an increase of 470 in July compared with a 356 rise in June.

The new total is 21,568 – still 11,532 short of the 32,000 EVs required by the end of this year to meet the previous National government target of 64,000 by the end of 2021.

Used light pure EV registrations jumped 230 from 11,372 in June to 11,602 in July, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Transport.

New light pure electrics were next, rising 88 from 4463 to 4551, then used light plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) went up by 80 from 1834 to 1914.

PHEVs in the new light category rose 67 from 3247 in June to 3314 in July.

Heavy EVs increased by five – going from 182 to 187 after barely moving in previous months.

The newly released registration figures show EVs are nearly back on track as sales increase post COVID-19.
