Ferrari PHEV revealed

Ferrari has unveiled a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SF90 Stradale sports car that uses electric power in cities and can reach nearly 340km/h.

Revealed at Ferrari’s base in Maranello, Italy, on May 29, the new 4WD PHEV has 25km electric range which helps drivers pass through city centres quietly and without producing emissions as more European cities establish policies around restricting polluting vehicles.

The SF90 Stradale has a V8 turbo engine capable of delivering 573.68kW, the highest power output of any eight-cylinder in Ferrari history. The remaining 162kW is delivered by three electric motors, one between the engine and the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission on the rear axle, and two on the front axle. Reverse is restricted to electric power.

It sports a 7.9kWh lithium-ion battery.

The driver selects one of the four power unit modes then just concentrates on driving, according to Ferrari. The sophisticated control logic takes care of the rest, managing the flow of power between the V8, the electric motors and the batteries.

The hybrid power unit is based on those developed for Formula One racing.

Ferrari produced the limited series LaFerrari as a previous hybrid model, but the SF90 Stradale will be the first to be more widely produced by the marque.

The Stradale is being viewed by several thousand global customers invited by Ferrari with reservations being taken and delivery expected within a year, the price to be announced shortly.

Other buyers may have to wait a year.
