Ford sticks EV battery in a thoroughbred

Ford has revealed an all-electric prototype called the Mustang Lithium at the SEMA motor show.

It has over 1350Nm of torque and more than 670kW of power begging to shred its Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

It features a unique manual Getrag six-speed gearbox derived from drag racing, and the Mustang’s high-performance “Super 8.8 Torsen” differential to cope with its colossal power generated by an 800-volt lithium-ion battery developed by a company called Webasto.

It’s one inch lower than a conventional V8 petrol-powered Mustang and features staggered-size 20-inch forged wheels, and carbon fibre body to reduce weight inhibiting the Phi-Power dual-core electric motor and dual power inverters.

Controlling all that grunt is a clever set of drive modes similar to Tesla’s “Ludicrous mode” called Valet, Sport, Track and Beast which can be changed using a custom in-dash 10.4-inch touchscreen.

Mustang Lithium gets Ford Performance’s Track Handling Pack and strut tower brace, Brembo six-piston front brakes from the Shelby GT350R, Sankuer Composite Technologies side splitters and rear diffuser, plus Webasto hood with see-through polycarbonate windows, TurboDX charging solution and TurboCord portable charger.

Ford says it will have “stunning quarter-mile acceleration”.

“This one-off Mustang prototype is a great opportunity for us, together with Webasto, to showcase to our customers what a new electrified powertrains can do for performance in a car they already know and love,” says chief product development and purchasing officer Hau Thai-Tang.

“Ford has made no secret of the fact that we are electrifying our most popular nameplates,” he adds.

Unfortunately it’s a one-off build prototype with no plans for full scale production.
