Fuel cell vehicles mark hydrogen day

Celebrating the fifth annual National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day on October 8, Hyundai’s US-market fuel cell SUVs, the Nexo and Tucson (ix35 in Australia) FCEVs have accumulated more than 13.5 million kilometres while emitting only water vapour.

That’s the equivalent of reaching the Moon’s surface and returning to Earth more than 17 times.

Hydrogen Day was formed to help raise awareness of a clean energy technology with October 8 (10.08) chosen in reference to the atomic weight of hydrogen (1.008).

The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA), its members, industry organisations, and state and federal governments commemorated National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day with a variety of activities and events across the US.

“Celebrating National Hydrogen Day 2019, we couldn’t be more proud of our Nexo and former Tucson fuel cell’s direct impact in reducing harmful greenhouse emissions in our planet,” Hyundai Motor America product, corporate and digital planning vice president Michael O’Brien says.

“As our hydrogen refuelling infrastructure continues to grow in California and into the north eastern US, we eagerly anticipate the exponential reduction in emissions it will bring, resulting in a cleaner atmosphere for everyone.”

The Nexo is the new technological flagship of Hyundai’s growing eco-vehicle portfolio and has an estimated 666km range, with refuelling possible in five minutes.

It’s in Australia and New Zealand for mainly promotional purposes as refuelling is limited.
