GM sold 59,303 EVs through the first eight months of the year, Ford sold 61,366 EVs – relying on heavily discounted Mach-Es and F-150 Lightnings – while GM now offers an expanding EV line-up.

They include the Chevy Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV (SUV and pickup) and the BrightDrop delivery vans, while deliveries of the Cadillac Optiq and Escalade IQ are expected soon.

“We are definitely outstripping the industry in terms of growth, in terms of EVs,” GM global markets president Rory Harvey told CNBC.

He reckons the Chevrolet Equinox entry-level EV could be one of the cheapest EVs in the US where the 2025 model is due to go on sale later this year, having an estimated 482.8km range.

CNBC says Tesla sold more than 304,000 EVs in the US during the first half of 2024, Hyundai and Kia sold 21,760 EVs in July and August, whereas GM sold 20,948 EVs.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV6 and EV9 are among top US EV sellers with 20,000 more EVs than GM sold in August.

Meanwhile, GM has done a deal with Hyundai to bring in a wider range of vehicles faster.
