Hummer EV ute and SUV unveil set for late 2020

The GMC electric Hummer ute is due to be revealed later this year alongside an electric SUV after COVID-19 delayed the initial May 20 unveiling.

Profiles of the Hummer ute and Cadillac SUV have been teased by GMC, the Hummer EV expected to be key to parent company General Motors’ US$20 billion EV investment.

GM recorded a nearly US$800 million loss during the second quarter of 2020 following pandemic related restrictions and a temporary production stoppage, The Verge reports.

The electric Hummer plan was announced by GM earlier this year and is expected to include an upgraded advanced driver assistance system, Super Cruise, and a modular “Ultium” EV platform GM announced in March.

The Hummer ute is due to start production in late 2021, with deliveries soon after, a few months behind Rivian’s plans to deliver its EV ute and SUV and about when Tesla’s Cybertruck should be ready to roll.

The Hummer EV is part of “a lot of exciting news in 2020”, GM president Mark Reuss says.

He says GM’s product announcements will build on the technology developed since launching the Chevy Bolt EV.

Reuss says the goal is to make tough electric utes.

“Our electric trucks (utes) will change what people thought they knew about EVs – and everything they know about Hummers,” he says.

“The GMC Hummer EV is our first entry, but it won’t be alone for long. We will offer not just one pickup, but multiple models with multiple variants, for multiple customers – a vehicle and package for everyone.”

The Hummer EV and multiple other models will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which received a US$2.2 billion injection.

Specifications for the Hummer EV and SUV are expected to be announced around the spring unveiling.
