Hydrogen for mobile power generation

Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Electric have agreed to develop and commercialise a mobile power generator package based on a hydrogen fuel cell system for vehicles.

The fuel cell system and technical support will be provided by Hyundai Motor while Hyundai Electric will develop and commercialise the mobile power generator package under the memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The FCEV generator is planned for mobile power generators and alternative maritime power supply solutions and is expected to be a game changer in the mobile generator market dominated by diesel generators.

Based on Hyundai Motor’s polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system that is used in its fuel cell vehicles, it can address carbon-neutral electric needs in a variety of industrial sectors such as port facilities, construction sites and industrial complexes.

“This MOU underlines the importance of providing carbon-neutral solutions in power generation applications in order to accelerate the establishment of a sustainable hydrogen society,” Hyundai Motor Group executive vice president and fuel centre head Saehoon Kim says.

“Hyundai Motor will continue to expand the potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology beyond mobility applications and into the power generation market.”

HTWO has recently been introduced as a new brand representing the group’s hydrogen fuel cell system and the mobile generation system is used in Electric Touring Car Racing (ETCR) where it can generate up to 160kW to charge two ETCR cars at the same time within an hour.
